Longshanks 2-1 Exiles

A closely fought and ludicrously violent week 5 match led to a 2-1 victory for the home side.

The Longshanks broke through the Exiles line on turn 2 and looked like scoring easily on turn 4, only for Tieran "Frosty" (possibly now to be re-nicknamed "Fumbly") Frostbright to fumble the ball in the endzone. Seconds later his embarrassing performance was capped by a blitz from the Exiles' skaven blitzer, leaving Frostbright badly hurt and out for the rest of the game. The Exiles' assassin, Celia, retrieved the ball but their turn was brought to a premature conclusion by a backfired attempt by the Exiles' beastman which left him with a fractured collarbone; even the apothecary was unable to fix the problem, such was the force of the blow.

The Longshanks were not slow in capitalising on the reprieve, several of them sprinting towards the assassin. They were far too far out to get to the ball though, surely? As it turned out, they knew something the Exiles didn't. One swift love potion later, and Celia found herself serving out the rest of the game in the knocked-out box. The Longshanks' wood elf lineman scooped up the ball in her perfumed wake and scored.

With little time left in the first half, the Exiles moved as fast as they were able, punching through the Longshanks' meagre defences without a pause. With the ball seemingly out in the open, the Longshanks charged towards it, arguably committing too much of their resources to an unlikely second touchdown. Indeed, anyone making that argument would have been vindicated - the Exiles swiftly passed the ball to their waiting Balthasar Cicero and scored just before the half-time whistle.

In the second half the Longshanks learned their lesson and refrained from sending too many players into the opposing half. A good thing too, for the play was much the same as before, with the Exiles passing the ball to a waiting receiver. This time however the passing game was two-fold - a short pass followed by a hand-off, followed by a touchdown. Alas, it was not to be - the Exiles' amazon catcher, distracted by the Longshanks' wood elf, fumbled the final catch, leaving the ball in the middle of what can only be described as an almighty scrum. After quite a bit of not-very-friendly pushing and shoving, one of the Longshanks fans intervened - or rather, his pet dog did. After scampering around with the ball, much to the amusement of the watching crowd, he deposited the ball some way back down the pitch, where a grateful Vallyn Swift seized it and threw a long bomb right across the pitch to Leorus Greenstone. For a moment it seemed Greenstone was certain to score immediately, but the cogs turning in his brain were almost audible as he counted the remaining Longshanks players on the pitch.

Realising what a disadvantage the home side would be if the Exiles were to receive the ball a third time, Greenstone raced across the pitch, stopping just short of the Exiles' endzone.

There followed a long and rather tedious series of scuffles, as the Longhanks fought desperately to keep the Exiles away from their ball-carrier, and the Exiles fought equally desperately to get to him. At the other end of the pitch, the picture was similar, as a drawn-out blocking battle left the Longshanks' amazon seriously injured, and a blatant foul took their rat ogre out of action. If anything this only redoubled the Longshanks determination not to score early. In the end, they held the ball just outside the endzone for five turns, scoring at the last possible minute. To the Exiles' frustration there was no remaining possibility of a score for them; and in contrast to the rest of the game, they were unable to extract even the satisfaction of an injury or two.

The Longshanks left the pitch seriously depleted - having sustained five casualties over the course of the match - but victorious.
