Progress!

This was written for Utter!Evolution to celebrate the 150th anniversary of On the Origin of Species but not performed until Utter!Film in November.

Progress!

Look around and tell me if you will
Where you see the march has brought us to.
Treading water over the cusp of a new century’s hill?
Or surfing the wave of primordial sludge
Straight to infinity and beyond.

If we took a microscope and looked into
Those pools of protozoic pre-Palaeozoic protoplasm
(Not an easy thing to do, or say, I’ll admit)
Would we find the concepts and precepts of our now
In oozy mirror reflection,
A new dawn’s inflection,
Striving for perfection,
Waiting to develop as Time kicks in?

All we have today we owe to what’s come and gone before
A triumph on a ball of rock, unique for now it seems
(The Drake equation I leave as an exercise for the listener)
And in the face of everything, quite a marvellous achievement.
So could someone please explain to me,
Just how did we get from amoebas to the CSA?
