(5/30) Lament of the Unseen Labourer

Okay, here's #5 and the last of my set on 'Falling'. Have to say, much to my chagrin, this was only the second thing that came to me when pondering the theme (the first being the 'pun' in the first poem). Anyway, to childhood game pretty much everyone has memories of...

Note: I wanted to format this in the shape of a set of falling blocks, but couldn't work out a way to do so without losing coherence.

Falling 5/5

Lament of the Unseen Labourer

Back-breaking labour
Lugging bricks
Shifting blocks
Never polystyrene.
Health and safety
Disregarded
As they fall from above.

And can no-one stop
That tinny muzak?
Even plugs can’t help
The echoes in my ears.

So many blocks –
Day in, day out:
Inconvenient
Troublesome
Loathsome
Onerous
Sickening
Juxtaposed
Zigzags!

Won’t somebody free me
From this tetromino hell?
Collectively cloned,
No union to join;
No balance, no joy
Since 1984.

Sweet release
From all stacking
Is just what I seek.
Even the maze,
Though it’s haunted,
Would be better.
