Dead of Night: The Moon in Darkness

You common people of the skies,
What are you when the moon shall rise?

Henry Wotton, "On His Mistress, the Queen of Bohemia".

A short Lunars series to be run in the not-too-distant future by Blackrat. Focussing on secrets and mystery, the characters find themselves at the centre of The Winding Path's most secretive plot yet...

Overview

This campaign is part of my crazy symmetrical set, The Cycle of Sun and Moon. The features of this entry in the set are as follows:

Lunar Faction: The Winding Path
Solar Caste: Night
Terrestrial Direction: South (Fire)
Celestial Direction: Up (Yu-Shan)
Exalted Adversary: Sidereals

It is intended to be run in six sessions, each with its own goal, and between which there'll be significant downtime - almost like six consecutive one-shots. Between goals there'll be plenty of bonus experience, so the PCs ought to be very powerful indeed by the final session. Just like the other campaigns in the set, the ultimate goal of the series is world-changing in scale - but unlike the others, the characters don't know what that goal is before the campaign starts. Typically of The Winding Path, you will receive orders and be expected to work out for yourselves the reason they have been given (or just to follow them).

Tone and Content

See "Solar Caste: Night" :-) There'll be plenty of sneaking around, clandestine meetings, midnight rituals in dark places. The characters will need to be cunning and subtle in order to achieve their masters' goals without alerting their enemies and bringing ruin to the Winding Path.

As a result, I'm expecting a reduction in the frequency of combat compared to most Exalted games we play. Of course, it depends on how you approach the challenges you'll face, but there could well be no more than one serious combat every other session - or even no combat at all if you choose to avoid it.

Setting Considerations

Broadly, the campaign starts in the standard Time of Tumult period, i.e. five years after the disappearance of the Scarlet Empress. Due to the significant downtime (exact figures TBD) between sessions, it is likely to move through time at a fair pace, which may result in some departure from the canon setting. I wouldn't expect there to be very significant differences, though.

As well as this, it should be noted that (a) I'm not nearly as well read on the Exalted-verse as you guys are and (b) I already have my own variations on the canon lore anyway. So don't be surprised if something turns up that's different from the way the books tell it - and don't assume I'll agree with you if you describe a feature of the canon setting. My world, my rules ;-)

And Finally...

This is my first stab at Narrating a RP campaign, so please be gentle. And I apologise in advance for any amateurism :-) Feedback is very much welcomed - I want you guys to enjoy it, so tell me how I can make that happen!

Concepts

I don't want to restrict character concepts, but given the features described on the campaign homepage I think there are a few suggestions that are worth making.

Firstly, since it'll be a mystery / secret-y kind of campaign, your characters should be able (and inclined) to be subtle. You don't need to go crazy on the stealth, but at least a Dex excellency might be a good idea. Similarly, characters don't need to be master assassins, but a character who wants to start loud and violent fights with everything they see probably won't help progress the campaign. Nor will characters who like to get drunk and blurt out their top-secret objectives to all and sundry. You've been chosen for this mission because you are trusted agents - please pick concepts that could have earned it :-)

Secondly, since there are only three of you, I'd suggest getting together to make sure your concepts are complementary. This absolutely doesn't mean you have to be perfectly balanced across all abilities - just that you don't want to be treading on each others' toes in one area and leaving another completely vacant by accident. You're welcome to leave skill areas out deliberately if you agree that's the sort of game you want to play - for example, to have little / no combat skill, and resolve to work around all challenges in a non-violent way. So one option is to create a perfect circle (triangle?), but you could also have e.g. three No Moons, each with a slightly different take on acquiring knowledge (spy / scholar / socialite, perhaps?). I'm hoping that the session goals are vague enough that there will always be many ways to successfully approach them. Anyway, point is that you can to some extent design your own game by designing your characters for the sort of game you want to play - just make sure you're all after the same thing first :-)

Thirdly, your characters should trust in the authority / vision of The Winding Path - see the Lunars book. You will be receiving orders from your faction, and you won't be told why (though you are of course invited to work it out). Characters who simply refuse or demand explanations will be missing the point of the campaign. If it were a longer campaign, I'd be more free-form, but in such a short series with a well-defined end point, I need to point you in the right direction a bit to start with...

Mechanics

For now, characters should be drawn up as standard starting Lunars. This might change as I have a closer look at the details, but that'd be a good starting point. (No rush though if you want to wait until I've confirmed this.) Bear in mind that your character will be getting a fair chunk of downtime XP in between each session, so they'll accelerate in power considerably faster than they would normally.

On top of the standard package, you can all take Mentor 2 for free - further details forthcoming. If you want to, you can probably increase this with background / bonus points as normal, but I don't honestly think you'll get much benefit out of it so please let me know before taking any other dots in Mentor. Similarly, taking Backing in The Winding Path probably won't provide any benefit on top of your Mentor dots.

In the unlikely event that you don't want to design your own characters, I can provide suitable ready-made characters or just suggest concepts that would work well.

Aarian Windwalker

Aarian is a full moon lunar created for Blackrat's Dead of Night series. He is a full moon, but much less combat heavy than a lot of his castemates. He is used as a messenger, with skills in espionage and counter-espionage his specialties. He is young and inexperienced at the moment, but eager to serve his mentor and aid his friends. He has tendencies towards being secretive and stand-off-ish and at his most extreme can become almost akin to an aesthetic hermit, but has worked hard to overcome this enough to form a small number of close relationships.

Unblemished Snow

Snow has been called a rake, a cad, a scoundrel and, once, a swashbuckler. He is less well known as one of Lunar's chosen, and a promising addition to The Winding Path. His mentor hopes that this latest assignment, with its more temperate companions and the explicit need for subtlety, will help him to resist the temptation to cuckold the rich and famous long enough to deliver on said promise.
